The founding Art Director of Art Republik magazine, the iconoclastic Southeast Asian-focused contemporary arts quarterly, based in Singapore.
Having designed its logo, and created its unique aesthetic and visual vernacular, as well as establishing the magazine's editorial stance and ideological framework — the magazine has gone on to receive accolades and has been recommended by Monocle magazine as well.
The segmentation and organisation of the stories into distinct sections of the magazine — demarcated by vastly different aesthetic treatment (with unifying tropes and elements, of course) was inspired by my interests in architectural theory and urbanism, and the fact that the magazine was called, almost literally, a "republic". Hence Art Republik, like a metropolis: different sections are like different parts of the city, different vibes, different feels, different energy.
Alongside Founding Managing Editor Marc Wong, the stories were often solicited and developed along every step of the way, with the visual and editorial aspects in tandem — unlike other traditional media outlets where design and the writers are often two separate and distinct departments. This synergy has enabled Art Republik to operate at a level that is more exciting and intuitive for its creators, and the result is on the pages, as well as working towards the magazine's agenda: to make art accessible to all, and not just to a select academic elite.
