Art Republik No. 1 (Dec-Feb 2014)
Feature story by Paul Hume. A lengthy chronological, view of the history of, and what ultimately defines "art". One of the very first stories designed for Art Republik magazine, the story arrived in just text form without any accompanying images; the unique problem was how to breathe life into a very dry academic text.
Initially I was just highlighting the interesting parts, then its practicality soon informed the aesthetic — text chunks were set in larger, black, extended typeface to feature the more interesting parts of the story and punctuated with the related images (some literal, some a loose association), turning it into a haphazard visual spectacle/thesis/chronological timeline. Like its source material, it was not the easiest to read, but like its subject, and with good art — it is nigh impossible to ignore. Stitched to the end of the story, was a short piece on Singapore's art history.
Art direction by Tan Boon Hau.
